The book of Daniel is at the same time one of the most familiar and one of the least understood books in the Old Testament. While every child knows the stories of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, the Handwriting on the Wall, and Daniel in the Lion’s Den, most adults have little knowledge or comprehension of the amazing prophecies found in the latter portion of the book. God has given us all of these things for our edification, and digging more deeply into the familiar narratives and unraveling the complex prophecies will alike enable us to appreciate the greatness of our God. The central theme of the book of Daniel is the sovereignty of God over the nations, which is revealed both in the way He used Daniel and his friends to honor Him in a pagan culture and the ways in which He revealed future events precisely as they came to pass. God’s sovereignty over the nations is an important truth for us as well, living as we do in a culture that is becoming increasingly pagan and in a world that shows the effects of godlessness on all sides. The prophecies of the book also point to the Son of Man who is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and will one day triumph completely over His enemies and those of His people.
